NIAS and Whitehaven Coal Unite to Support the Regions’ Talented Athletes and Coaches

The Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS) is excited to announce its new partnership with Whitehaven Coal and looks forward to the opportunities this partnership will bring to the region. With similar geographic footprints, this united front was initiated to support the region’s talented athletes and coaches from the Northern Inland, creating more pathways for regional communities to thrive in sport, on and off the field.

“This partnership embodies a shared commitment to fostering local talent and expanding opportunities for our athletes and coaches. Whitehaven Coal’s support will not only enrich our program’s capacity but also strengthen our ability to address the unique challenges faced by rural communities” said Shona Eichorn, CEO of NIAS.

The COVID pandemic and recent environmental challenges highlighted the need for collective support to enhance not only the physical but also the mental, social, financial well-being and sustainability of individuals and communities in our region. This partnership demonstrates a commitment to building resilience and strengthening the bonds within Northern NSW and the Northern Inland region more specifically, aiming to nurture talent and equip athletes and coaches to achieve their full potential.

As the major sponsor for the annual NIAS Induction Day held on 10 November 2024 at Lake Keepit, Whitehaven Coal’s investment will play a pivotal role in launching the next cohort of athletes and coaches into an enriching year of skill development, training, and competition. This day marks the beginning of a dynamic and collaborative journey, celebrating the dedication of our region’s athletes and recognising the essential role that partnerships like this play in shaping a sustainable and thriving sports community.

Whitehaven Coal’s General Manager – Community Engagement, Darren Swain, said the company is delighted to partner with NIAS to support the region’s talented athletes and coaches.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to providing tangible support to community organisations that play an important role in our region.

“We look forward to contributing to the nurturing of local talent and helping to create more pathways for them to succeed.”
