NIAS Athletes Recognised as Sportpeople of the Year

NIAS is very excited to have had four of our Academy athletes awarded the Sportperson of the Year award at their local council areas Australia Day Awards Ceremony. The athletes are spread across the Glen Innes Services Club Netball program, the Jack Newton Junior Golf Golf program, the Inland Technology Tennis program and the Tamworth City Toyota Basketball program.

Hailing from the Academy's associate partner Moree Plains Shire Council area, Rhys Devney (Golf program) was awarded the Sportsperson of the Year Award. Due to the cancellation of many events and travel restrictions in place due to COVID-19 Rhys had limited competitions that he was able to compete in. However, in between being sent home from boarding school to complete a large chunk of his year 11 studies from home due to COVID-19, Rhys did manage to significantly reduce his golf handicap! Once he returned to boarding school, restrictions were in place which meant extra challenges he had to overcome when using the golf course to practice his skills. Not only this but Rhys' dedication to his sport and his diligence in balancing new challenges led him to come away as the Junior Club Champion in 2020 for the Moree Golf Club. Well done Rhys!

Over with NIAS associated partners in the Gunnedah Shire Council area, Aaron Osmond (Tennis program) was also awarded the Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award. Aaron started 2020 with high achievements as he claimed the winning position for his age group in the boys singles at the 2020 ANZ Newcastle Open Silver AMT Tournament. Finishing the year, Aaron not only claimed the Division 1 Men's Singles Champion at the Gunnedah Championships last September, but he was also apart of the winning doubles team in the division 1 men's competition and the division 1 mixed doubles competition. Well done Aaron!

Two athletes were recipients of the Liverpool Plains Shire Council Australia Day awards with Lucas Percy being awarded the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award and Molly Elford being awarded the Sportsperson of the Year award. Lucas was selected into the U15s boys squad for Country Basketball Shootouts that took place from the 16th-18th January. Molly  played netball in the Tamworth U17s Division 2 team at Regional League - where her team won the division. Last year Molly was selected into the U16s Northern Eagles Touch football team where she played in the State and National Touch Football titles. Yesterday Molly attended trials for the U18s Northern Eagles Touch football team where she was selected. Molly has also been selected into the U18s Macksville Falcons Touch Football team where she will play at the NSW 2021 State Cup in February. Well done Lucas and Molly!

Congratulations to all four athletes on recieving these awards!
