NIAS Life Skills Education Weekend 2021
The NIAS Life Skills Education Weekend took place over the 27th and 28th March at the University of New England and SportUNE. As a collective, the Regional Academies of Sport endeavour to provide athletes in the Academy system with holistic development through not only on field performance, but through education as well. With there being many key factors into making a great athlete and member of society, there is an importance to be placed on this education to ensure it is relevant for the athletes, and will assist them not only in their present goals, but with their future development as well.
The education weekend saw Saturday packed with education sessions on performance psychology, nutrition for athletes, healthy body through physiotherapy and life after sport. Guest speakers for the weekend included Marni Hietbrink from Peak Psychology, Warren Ansell from Pro-Active Physio, Selena Chan from Food Smart Selena, Liana Riddington and Serenah Alam from Headspace, and Ben Bible and Tania Court from UNE.
Flying into Armidale to meet the athletes and discuss her journey into elite sport was the captain of the NSW Swifts, Maddy Proud. Not only was the weekend full of invaluable education for aspiring young athletes, and the attendance of Maddy Proud, but athletes also engaged in strength and conditioning, pool recovery sessions, squad training sessions and an Academy dinner with Academy major partner Armidale City Bowling Club.
